Important Message from Maine Lions District 41 Governor Tia Knapp
March, 15, 2020
Good Morning Lions,
I have been closely monitoring the situation with COVID-19 (the coronavirus) in our communities by following advisement from our CDC, and other regarded resources.
The immediate risk of being exposed to this virus is still low for many, (all are encouraged to practice social isolation - leaving a personal space of 6 ft, good personal hand washing hygiene), but as the COVID-19 virus expands, that risk will increase, particularly at risk are older adults, and persons with chronic health conditions.
Things are moving quickly. Within the past two days the Pentagon announced a total domestic travel ban for all troops, civilian personnel and their families until May 11 in an effort to limit their potential exposure. Canada has also issued a travel ban for non-essential travel.
District 41 leadership has decided to err on the side of caution and to cancel and or postpone all non-essential meetings and events to be held in the next 14 days, to be re-evaluated after April 1st. This includes this weeks’ honored visit from International President Choi, and the much anticipated and favored Speak Out competitions. District Speak out Chairperson, Lion Bruce Roullard, will be reaching out to his regional, and club level Speak Out chairpersons to clarify the details regarding any events scheduled to be held during this time. I realize that this is a disappointment for all involved. I apologize for any inconvenience.
I urge our clubs to also consider postponing all non-essential events if you have not yet done so. The fact is that containment is key. In our prudence, let's not lose sight of our neighbors, and others who are aged, or predisposed to illness. Lions please continue to make a difference, set up a plan on how your club will respond to this event, perhaps a phone tree to our aging members, neighbors, and other home bound who are at risk and not able to pick up supplies, mail or who just may appreciate a telephone call. I thank you many times over. I believe in you and know you will do what needs to be done. We are Lions - We serve.
If you have any questions or concerns, I urge you to contact me by telephone, or email.
Lion Tia, DG
