Lion John Rayne

Mr. Rayne was born in Waltham, Mass. a son of John E. and Dorothy A. (Caouette) Rayne. He was a graduate of Waltham High School and attended Bentley School of Accounting before entering the Navy. While in the Navy he was stationed at Quonset Naval Base in Rhode Island and served aboard the USS Cambria in the Mediterranean during Peacetime and the Vietnam era.

            Mr. Rayne, a former Eagle Scout, was a Scout Master in Rhode Island while in the Navy. He worked in the food industry for his entire career. Starting at Brandeis University, Waltham, Mass, then Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Mass. Gould Academy, Bethel, ME, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging, and completed his career as head of food services at the Cumberland County Jail, Portland, ME.

            Mr. Rayne was very active in Lions Club International. He joined in October, 1974 in Bethel, Maine and served as President from 1976-1977, Tail twister in 1977-1978, Secretary from 1975-1976, Assistant Secretary/Treasurer from 1978-1979, and Director of the club in1978 and 1979. He also served as Deputy District Governor for Region 4 in 1978 and 1979. During the years 1974 to 1979, he chaired numerous club and district committees.

In 1979, he transferred to Presque Isle, Maine Lions Club and held the offices of Secretary from 1980-1983, Deputy District Governor for Region 1 from 1981 to 1982. During these yeas he also chaired numerous club and district committees.

Mr. Rayne transferred to Tri-Berwick Club, Berwick, ME in 1984.  He served as Secretary from 1986 -1987 and from 1999 -2000, Club President from 1989-1990, 1997-1998 and 1998-1999, and Treasurer for two terms 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. He chaired countless club, district and state committees. He was awarded Life Membership in Lions International in October 2003 and had received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 1994.

He transferred to the Kittery, Me Lions Club in 2003 and to Charlotte, North Carolina Club in 2006. Mr. Rayne was recognized for Perfect Attendance for all the years from 1975 to 2005!  His daughter, Rachel said "The man devoted his life to helping others. I'm very proud of him."
He was former resident of Waltham and Watertown, Massachusetts, and of Bethel, Berwick and Crouseville, Maine, before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, a few years ago. Mr. Rayne died suddenly at his residence on, 10 July, 2007.

            He was the father of Christine Caprise of Gilbert, AZ., and Rachel Grantham of Charlotte, NC; brother of Dorothy A. "Dolly" MacDonald of Phoenix, AZ., formerly of Waltham, MA. and James A. Rayne of South Upton; and proud grandfather of Acadia Grantham, Camden Grantham and Kaden Grantham all of Charlotte, NC, and Thomas Caprise and Annaliese Caprise of Gilbert, AZ.
